Message by H.E. the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Marios Garoyian.

It is indeed a great pleasure and honour for the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus to host the next European Conference of Presidents of Parliament, to be held in Limassol, from 10 to 12 June 2010.

I am convinced that the Conference,  through the two very important themes to be discussed, will constitute another significant step in the efforts of the Council of Europe to promote and reinforce its fundamental principles and core values.

At the same time, in organizing this Conference, we will be making the necessary arrangements to extend to all of you the opportunity of sharing with us the natural beauty of Cyprus and its rich culture, which has contributed, in more than one way, to the flourishing of civilization in Europe.

I look forward to welcoming you in Cyprus and extending to you all our warm hospitality, a tradition which has been a characteristic trait of the people of Cyprus throughout its long history.

Marios Garoyian,
President of the House of Representatives
of the Republic of Cyprus.

European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Cyprus: how to promote the rights and responsibilities of parliamentary opposition, and the principle of non-discrimination

Strasbourg, 04.06.2010 – Speakers and Presidents of Parliament from the 47 Council of Europe member states will gather on 11 and 12 June 2010 at Limassol in Cyprus, on the occasion of a conference organised by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). They will look at good practice concerning the rights and responsibilities of the opposition in a parliament, as well as the role of national parliaments in implementing the principle of non-discrimination.

The Presidents of international parliamentary assemblies, as well as parliaments enjoying observer status with PACE (Canada, Israel, Mexico), are also invited. Around 350 participants are expected.

The conference will be opened by the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Marios Garoyian, PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu, and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias. The President of the Bulgarian National Assembly Tsetska Tsacheva, the President of the Swiss National Council Pascale Bruderer Wyss and the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg will make presentations on the themes of the conference.
